Macau is a city of spectacular sights and sounds. Most people that travel to the city really do not appreciate that aspect about it but nevertheless it is an aspect of the city that really can not be denied. People go to Macau primarily for the gambling that is available within the city limits and secondarily for the fact that some of the franchises of the best resort hotels in the world are located in Macau . It has therefore developed a reputation as being a place of luxury and gambling and while this is certainly an interesting place to consider because of all of that it is really the awesome sights located inside this city that have the ability to get people reaching for their cameras in a very real way.
Macau is home to sights that come from three distinct areas. The first area is European culture as the European colonial powers were responsible for the creation of a large part of the city. Specifically, the Portuguese history in the area of Macau has done a lot in terms of pushing the city forward and creating the different areas within the city and for that reason you can see a lot of evidence of Portuguese presence within the city of Macau . In addition to European adventurism, Macau is also home to a large amount of Chinese influence. The Chinese took over the administration of this city from the Europeans and turned a lot of the architecture into something that had a lot more in common with the east than it did with the west. Finally, the citizens of Macau have created their own unique culture that blends with European and Chinese influences for the final result that you see in the city tours that are available.
A very good example of where the distinction between the different cultures is present is the religious icons that are available in the city. When you take a walk around the city and take a look at the different religious buildings, you will find a number of churches and cathedrals with distinct Portuguese design situated in some cases right next to temples that are dedicated to the worship of many different eastern religions. Even a large number of the cathedrals in Macau that are still very Christian in terms of their worship are cathedrals that have succumbed to some of this fusion. There are cathedrals out there that have distinctly eastern architecture roofs just as there are temples that have a lot more in common with the very plain design of the western cathedrals than they do with the flourishing designs that are typically associated with the east. And in between all of these different design conflicts is of course the spirit of the Macau people making every building unique in its own way. You have to really see it to appreciate it and that is why it is highly recommended that anyone traveling to Macau take at least one tour of the city while they are there.
