Shopping in Macau

Shopping is a pastime that everyone can appreciate and the Macau tourism people are no exception to this rule. There are many shops available in and around the city of Macau that allow you to buy souvenirs for people to enjoy or even practical branded items like clothing that you can give to people to wear proudly as a reminder of the trip you took to this excellent city.

When you are purchasing anything in Macau , it is worthwhile to note that the local currency is known as the Pataca with the abbreviation MOP. In addition to the MOP, you will find that most of the businesses in the area also accept the Hong Kong Dollar (HKD) at a rate that is equal to that of the MOP. The interesting thing about that however is that you can usually exchange 100 HKD and get 103 MOP in return for your exchange and since all of the businesses in the area usually equate the two currencies you can gain some free spending money just by making sure you exchange any HKD you have for MOP once you get into Macau. You will find that the local currency also usually exchanges at a rate around 8 MOP per 1 USD. Another currency that is accepted in Macau is the Chinese Yuan (CHY) although it is not accepted as universally as the HKD is.

As for the actual shopping, you will probably end up shopping in an area that is close to where your accommodations are. With a couple of exceptions you will find that shopping centers tend to be quite generic in Macau with all of the different shops of the same type tending to offer the same merchandise for you to purchase. Unless you are specifically traveling to another part of Macau for a reason other than shopping there is no reason to travel longer distances in the hopes of finding something unique unless the rare situation arises where the shops in your area run out of merchandise due to a large volume of purchases over a short period of time. Such an event has never happened on a large enough scale to affect the tourism industry in the city as shops in any particular neighborhood are usually a dime a dozen as far as selling merchandise that tourists would be interested in is concerned.

Another thing to note is that getting extra money in Macau is quite easy to do. There are automated teller machines all over the place in Macau to the point where you can find them on practically every street in the city. Macau ATMs accept all of the international debit cards so if you have a card that runs on any international network you should not have any problems getting the money that you need. There are many local debit networks across Hong Kong and China that are also accepted in Macau and that in turn means that shopping in Macau is easily facilitated by quick and painless access to money unlike in many other areas of the Asian continent.
